Vivo Rolls Out its First In-Display Fingerprint Sensor Smartphone

Vivo, a Chinese smartphone maker has rolled out its first-ever in-display fingerprint sensor smartphone at CES 2018. The company claims that the smartphone is all set for production. The fingerprint technology on this phone will allow users to unlock the phone by placing their finger on the display. However, there are still no details regarding the official name of the upcoming Vivo smartphone.

The technology called Clear ID was first revealed by Synaptics in December 2017. And since then there have been speculations regarding which upcoming phone will feature this latest technology. The FS9500 optical in-display fingerprint sensor has been undergoing mass production with top five OEM’s (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

The new fingerprint sensor will be scratch-proof and waterproof and will be embedded in the display of the smartphone. Vivo will be one of the first to showcase the in-display fingerprint sensor. However, a Spanish smartphone vendor called Doogee has claimed to sport similar features in its Doogee V smartphone.

According to the press statement given by Vivo, the in-display fingerprint sensor is positioned between the OLED and glass panel covering the display. The demand for in-display sensors has increased after smartphones have been featuring a full display with edge-to-edge 18:9 wide aspect ratio.

Vivo is currently displaying this next level technology at the CES 2018. Apart from the in-display fingerprint sensor feature on this phone, no other features and details have been revealed by the company yet. Based on a report on India Today, Vivo claims that the upcoming smartphone will be announced early this year and further details of the smartphone will be revealed during the launch.

Most smartphone brands like Samsung, LG, Xiaomi and Apple have ditched the side bezels resulting in taller displays. As of now, smartphone manufacturers have relocated the placement of the fingerprint sensor to the rear. But with Vivo’s latest announcement we can expect other smartphone companies to take up on the latest technology as well.
