Microsoft Surface Book 2 Could Ditch the Detachable Display

The Microsoft Surface Book is company’s ultimate Windows 10 laptop surprised everyone with a detachable display which made it a premium 2-in-1 device. Though, the Surface Book laptop couldn’t manage to justify the high price tag. Now, the next generation of Surface Book might ditch the tablet feature and comes as a regular laptop. As per a DigiTimes report, Microsoft has started the mass production of Surface Book 2 laptop and it could get launched by the end of April.

The Microsoft Surface Book 2 will feature a 13.5-inch display and it will boast a magnesium-aluminium chassis. The report also suggested that Microsoft will offer a clamshell design instead of the existing 2-in-1 design.

Coming to the pricing, the Microsoft Surface Book 2 will cost far less than the existing one due to the removal of detachable display feature. The prices of the Surface Book 2 laptop will start at $1000 (roughly Rs 67,000), whereas the original Surface Book pricing started from $1499 (roughly Rs 98,250) when it was announced.

The lowered-down price of the new Microsoft laptop is believed to be done for attracting more users. Also, the detachable design of the device didn’t offer great tablet features on it and furthermore, it confused the users between the Surface Book and Surface Pro tablet lineup.

Last year, Microsoft sold 500,000 units of the Surface Book 2-in-1 laptop. The figures include performance version of the Surface Book. With the lower price version, Microsoft could witness the increased sales figures of the Surface Book. The report speculated that this year, the numbers could reach up to 1.5 million units.

The report claimed that the mass production of Surface Book 2 has already begun, citing the sources from the supply chain. If it is to be believed, the announcement of the notebook will come at the end of April. Apple is also expected to release the latest iPad Pro lineup at the end of April. However, there is no confirmation from Microsoft about the new notebook.

Moreover, DigiTimes, which reported the news of Microsoft Surface Book 2 has a mixed track record when it comes to the prediction of upcoming products. So the details mentioned in the report might have taken with a pinch of salt.
